As I began working on Step 2 in the AA program, my sponsor asked me to write a paragraph describing who my God is. It took me several days to sit down and write this paragraph, because I didn’t want to “rip off God” in my description of Him. The truth is though, no combination of words can adequately describe who my God is.
Here’s what I came up with though:
My God is really creative. The attention He has put into all aspects of life shows that He doesn’t miss the details. My God is aware of my thoughts, struggles, desires, emotions, and even the smallest annoyances I may face. He is no stranger to who I was, who I am, and who I am going to be. God is marked by graced- in fact, He is the creator of grace, and the interior designer of this life. But just as the designer of a house doesn’t always see the intended results, I stray from God’s plan often. God is infinitely faithful. He draws me back to His design, as long as I grasp His patient, outstretched hand. He is all consuming, holding all authority and all righteousness- yet He gives me freedom to explore the world He created because He wants to see me filled with joy. God wants to bless me. He wants to use me for a greater purpose. My God doesn’t mess around. When things falter, it’s because I messed around. My God is stronger than any fear, calmer than the stillest water, fiercer than a roaring lion, and more loving than any earthly comparison. Why? Because He is love, and the creator of it all. My God demands my respect. He commands me to live uprightly. He is my father, and I am called His treasured daughter. my God is generous, and He suffered to save. My God doesn’t change His mind. He doesn’t abandon me when I mis-prioritize my relationship with Him. My God is the ultimate forgiver, problem solver, and hope instiller. My God is enough.
This is who I believe my God is, and I continually discover more as I fellowship with Him. You know, today is July 4th and everyone is celebrating and spending time with friends and loved ones. I’m on my bed, holding my stuffed bear I was given for Christmas probably 15 years ago, and just sitting in the stillness of my Lord. Today I’m celebrating the freedom I have in Christ- and that is a freedom to celebrate every single moment- not just once a year.
Beautiful!! Love your description of God! Thankful that you are seeking Him and resting in His love.
